Genie, There's a well rounded thread on free drop in's here: http://groups.google.com/group/coworking/browse_thread/thread/75c5efd0d5b2c95b/88f60c972efb46e5?
My take away from it is that it can be an asset to allow limited free drop ins as long as you have capacity and it is part of a model that encourages them to join. As I survey the coworking experience here, it seems as if there is no marketing that can compare with just getting people in the door to join the community. It appears that engaging your community is job One. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to dial in the right model once you are at capacity to get the right blend for the community. For instance you can offer a three days free card, one free a month, or just free as long as there is room. It would be great to hear some stories from list veterans about how to best convert the free drop ins to paying members. It sounds as if you have some great ideas for your group. I'd be interested to see which work out the best and which don't end up adding value. Keep us posted!
