I second the watching of the FAQ video that Alex mentioned.  Great
stuff, better than reality tv.  My town has about 50,000 with a large
seasonal flux in people due to our university.  I wouldn't let the
risk of some corporation setting up shop worry you.  A few "too-
business-minded" people who have tried to start coworking have failed
b/c they either aren't interested or don't know how to connect with
the community.  If you are passionate about it, connect with the real
values of coworking and know a handful of creative, community minded
people, you will be able to do it!
