Sorry to hear of this. Could be he felt attacked if your wording hinted that others felt this way but you were the messenger. It would leave him wondering who exactly felt that way... and since he'd never know since they didn't approach him it would create tension, for that person at least, any time they interacted with another member. If your approach was simply the manager reminding someone about points in the membership agreement, then you are dealing with an overly sensitive and insecure person, and if not this incident then something else would be cause for sensation.
