We were thinking about adding a sign up online, seeing as people call asking why they cant do everything on line. We thought about it a couple of times, luckily before we seriously rolled this idea out we had a first hand experience as to why NOT allow strangers to sign up online.

We signed up one member totally over the phone and through email and he seemed nice enough. Once he came in, he really didn't understand what coworking was (even though we explained it over the phone). He had lots of complaints and current members had complaints about him. It didn't work out and he canceled two days later. We learned that in order for people to fully understand how we work, our space, and our atmosphere, they need to be here. We also need to make sure that we get along with them as well.

Human contact is really important.

Agreed with Angel - we actually don't allow members to sign up for memberships online, we require them to do a drop-in day first. If the day goes well for them and for us (to date I don't know of a single time it hasn't), we roll the $25 into a membership. It puts emphasis on human contact during that onboarding process rather than "signing up for a service".

The barrier is higher than signing up from home, but that seems to have kept out a lot of the sketchiness that people seem to be concerned about.

This has also allowed us to convert our drop-ins to at least basic members very, very easily because it's the exact same price, additional days are a bit cheaper, and they're hooked by the 2nd or 3rd visit.

We don't use an application at Cohere but rather ask any prospective
member to do a day pass prior to making the decision to sign up. I
think it's worked pretty well so far!
