I very much agree with Jerome on this.

Square feet per desk doesn't tell you anything about the shape of the room,
how desks fit in it, or how people can interact.

Square feet is a constraint, but it's not a proxy for usage. We redesign
our floorplan on a regular basis and every time find new, more effective
ways to use the space and none of that can be learned from square footage.

Drawing things on paper is good. Another thing you can do is, if you have
access to the space, to cut pieces of cardboard to the size of your desks
and play with layouts on the floor. That will give you an even better feel
for how much room around desks you'll need for things to feel comfortable,
especially if you're not as experienced as Jerome or myself in laying
things out on paper.
