I'm polling every 5 minutes only for the subject lines. Of these I
really only need the grade, the id (for downloading the full report if
needed) and the name of the distribution.

NNTP makes this a single API call per 5 minutes which looks decent:

    $nntp->xhdr("Subject", [$from, $upto]);

I'm feeding the results into a database that has the same schema as
http://devel.cpantesters.org/cpanstats.db.gz. So anything that allows me
to continue doing would be fine.
