It's possible of course, I think a local utility (in the zope 3 sense) is enough, and probably not too hard to do, but it's not written yet for Zope 2. Then we'd have to have of a way to export it to .po files too.

Maybe in production, it really shouldn't, but this is where it is actually useful, afaik (for end users).

Five now has a nice way of doing i18n through the zope 3 i18n modules, which read .mo files from the filesystem and are "zope standard". I'd like to rip out Localizer to replace it with this, but this would mean a certain loss of functionality: people won't be able to go to the ZMI to translate things anymore.
