With Apache1 you can also activate caching, though with a slightly different syntax. And, FYI, caching is unfortunately buggy in some places both in Apache 1 and 2.0 (well-known fact + first hand experience). I have been told that the bugs have been fixed in 2.1, and hope to verify it by myself soon. But that doesn't invalidate the approach above.
