The notion of slavery as a "propaganda item" versus "real cause" is philosophically ,
politically, ideologically and linguistically absurd. Reactionaries (to use a short
hand term for how I classify such; I know their typology 's more complicated than
that) of all stripes and colors have been seeking to dilute the progressive
anti-slavery aspects of the US Civil War, hoping to conceal or smear the heroic
democratic legacy of anti-racism by Blacks, Whites and others. Was the "real" cause of
the Vietnam war to defend and/or expand democracy in Southeast Asia, was it to prevent
a "domino" from falling, etc..?
As for the definition of imperialism, Nestor's formulation is the only meaningful one
there is so far, if we hope to see such matters examined within the schema of a
science of society and of history.

me, but isn't this slavery thing more of a propaganda item vs. a real cause of
that war?
