Deep ecologists and Marxists share one fundamental premise. We might build
on that.

Both of us begin by rejecting compartmentalized, mechanistic science.

I posted earlier about the shortcomings of Marxists with their faith in the
industrial teleology of capitalism, socialism, communism. We can go back
and say, okay, we didn't take this into account. That's our weakness. Our
strength, especially of those who might be called Leninists, is a theory of
political struggle. We have a pretty good idea of how to take power.

I find myself accepting much of what the deep ecologists are saying in
describing the problem. I'm afraid I don't have the predisposition to be
down with the Gaia-spirit stuff, so we may not be able to share tender
moments reflecting on our spirituality. So what!

Where's the common ground? I think there's plenty.

I would refer the non-marxist deep ecologists to Marx's criticism of
mechanistic science. The Philosophy of Right, or Lenin's critique of the
metaphysics of positivism. You might think it was written by one of your own.
