Japan's main stock index has closed at a 16-year low, with sentiment dampened
by last week's sharp falls in US stocks. The Nikkei Stock Average lost a
massive 456.53 points, or 3.75%, to close at 12,171.37. The US dollar was
buying 120.44 yen on the foreign exchange market, up 0.68 from Friday and
above last week's New York level of 119.70.On the stock market, the Nikkei
slumped in response to the decline in US stocks sparked when Cisco Systems
became the third big American hi-tech company to announce a bleak revenue
outlook.
