I always dread getting one of the "less desirable" lair ends since they have
less XP, less loot, etc. I literally get excited when I have the dire
elephant end (at least with certain characters), since its chalked full of
usually great items, and even if nothing is usable, I can almost always get
all the dire elephants killed for xp.

IMO, evening out the branch ends somewhat (not to say that they should be
exact, but a few thousand xp and comparable loot, or some combination of the
two in varying amounts, is a reasonable approach.
