Possible solutions:

1. Standardise loot and XP across all Lair branch endings:

Pros: no "argh, I got a shitty ending!", it keeps the average Lair XP the same.
Cons: we'd have to dramatically increase or dramatically reduce XP per-map.

2. Standardise just the loot across Lair branch endings--large endings
get more twice as much loot as smaller endings--and place either 1
large ending or 2 small endings.

Pros: "yay I got two endings!", it keeps the average Lair XP the same,
you will get the same amount of loot on average--but have to complete
two maps.
Cons: I can't really think of any. It keeps everything balanced, it
provides the same amount of loot and XP per Lair ending without having
to compromise by increasing the smaller maps (and thus, overburdening
them; they are quite small) or decreasing the larger maps (which would
make them sparse).

I really like option 2. The only difficulty I can think of is ensuring
that the smaller maps are placed in opposite corners. It would either
be easily implemented with current code, or not require too much in
the way of changes.
