I absolutely love the orb noises. (I have recently overhauled the page https://crawl.develz.org/wiki/doku.php?id=dcss:brainstorm:orbrun so that it's easier to make a plan for orb behaviour.) I am not sure that this last commit of Jude's necessary. Two reasons: * The orb is the most special item in the dungeon. Let's rule that it cannot be silenced. Gameplay-wise, this rarely matters. I see it like this: the orb being loud even when Silence was cast is a lucky case where we can exemplify the anomaly of the item in in-game terms. * Silence does not mean that beings are suddenly unable to hear. Rather, it means that things suddenly make no noise anymore (this is also why Silence wakes up everyone: the absence of all sounds is very unnatural) -- so the orb exception would not be about beings hearing where they usually couldn't but rather one sound source insilenceable. We already have a special case for the orb: it resists being apported. That's mention in the orb's description. (It should also be mentioned in the Apportation targeting interface when targeting the orb; probably plus a prompt -- that's much better than adding a line in the spell's description.) Likewise, we'd mention the orb's resistance to silence in the item description. > Now, it flashes a variety of coloured, pretty lights, which have the > same effect of waking up nearby monsters. This is achieved by > "fake_noisy", which generates noise (but no message) regardless of > whether or not the area is silenced. I like that, too. As I see it, running around with the orb should be a visual firework -- a spectator who has no clue about Crawl should gather than something special is going on. What are the lights? ##crawl-dev came up with the idea of two colours being used, the standard choice being magenta and light magenta. Perhaps we could also (sometimes? randomly?) use other two-colour sets, or occasionally even more colours.
