I disagree. I know this was already discussed on IRC and I agree with
the reasons brought up then, as well. If flavourful silent behaviour
(like glowing and flashing) has the same result as noise, but the
latter is more difficult to explain (you basically need to reflavour
silence), I strongly prefer the former.

That's one way to read it but judging from the IRC comments hardly
anyone looks at it that way. I *still* have difficulty wrapping my
head around that (comparatively simple) concept and seeing how it's
mostly a gimmicky effect, this violation of the suspension of
disbelief is simply not necessary.

For the record, I've always assumed that monsters capable of casting
spells when silenced did so because they are capable of casting spells
noiselessly, e.g. via gestures or superpowered brain waves, or
whatever. So you could argue that the orb is capable of alerting
everyone around by some kind of telepathic spell, but having it shriek
through silence seems over the top. The two terms "shriek" and
"silence" are a direct contradiction.
