What would also be needed then would be a way to have a home 'adress'
with the post office, one that it regards as being your local branch.

Then any package would travel from the post office it was sent to, to
the players local post office, and the time (and the chance of it
getting lost) could be based on the distance between them

(possibly each post office could have a queue of messages, and a
schedule when mail coaches would arrive then there could be a way of
traversing the network to figure out which mail should be on which
mail coach, and when the next one will arrive). - That can wait for
later though....

maybe then there could be competing delivery firms, like there are
today, who would charge more, but deliver quicker (20 minutes instead
of 20 hours).
