I think that removal is actually not that bad, especially if something is really not that well maintained to begin with. If somebody is really interested, he or she can still take the code and update it as an external plugin / add-on library. In fact, I find it more harmful if a CS newcomer burns itself by using a not-so-well maintained (and, thus, probably lower quality) module in the main code base and gets the impression that this speaks of the quality of CS as a whole. I think it is very important for the public perception of CS to have only the high quality parts in its core and clearly declare everything else as "unofficial" by keeping it out of the main code base. As to CSExtra, I think the problem is that it isn't propagated anywhere (the website does not mention it at all, for instance). Updating its status to something like an official "third-party" plug-in repository - like Ogre Add-Ons in the Ogre 3D community - might be a nice idea. However, also in this case there should be a maintainer for everything in there.
