I usually side with Valve on backwards-incompatible updates (although most can be avoided) because you don't need even more things stopping programmers from helping the game evolve, the job's stressful enough. Moreover more changes aren't that big of a deal for the SM devs now (I think they've got scripts to detect interface changes, etc.)
However as mentioned earlier, this update isn't "minor" at all, in which completely undocumented engine changes happen, that they most definitely could have predicted would break some plugins. No warning.
