Hi all,
I've been reading on this list for a while now, taking my time before
opening my mouth :)
Welcome! You should know, though, that you started this thread
incorrectly -- you replied to an existing message instead of sending a
new message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] So, your message got
threaded on to the old thread, which messes up the archives and makes it
less likely that others will see your message and subsequently
reply to you. Just a word of warning for next time!
I came across an interesting problem last night, while skinning the
front end of a tool we're going to be using here at work. I created a
mock-up design which you can view here
(http://prezence.servehttp.com/10min/mockup.png) and as you can see
what I want to do is style a multi-select box. I did a bit of reading
about select boxes, and to my shock and horror I discovered that I
won't be able to style the border of the <select>.
That is, of course, unless someone here knows a workaround other than
the "replace it all with images and hide the original element" one (I
can't remember the link or title of this concept, but I think it's
fairly well known).
I know someone on this list, Christian Heilman, I think, has a
Javascript solution to create something that looks and acts like a
select box but isn't a select box, so it can be styled at will. Perhaps
Christian or whoever will chime in with the link. I don't have it,
because I got over the fact that you can't style form elements very much
long ago. :-)
My second question relates to styling the "selected" items in the
list, using a red background colour (depicted in the mockup) as
opposed to the default blue background+white text that IE+FF defaults to.
Actually, that's not necessarily what it defaults to. On my PC, the
highlight color is a lovely light olive green, because that's the color
scheme I set for the OS (can't stand that bright XP blue!). So, the
look of the select box is largely controlled by the OS, and thus there's
not much you can do with CSS to change how it looks.
