Well, I used a value of 100% instead of 'inherit', and that seems to have resolved a lot of the problems, particularly in the header and footer. However, two problems remain. The background graphics on the left and right side of of the main body are still a little out of alignment. And the "Made with Articlass" text at the bottom right corner is too far to the right. Any advice on how to kill these last two snags would be greatly appreciated.
