I may be misunderstanding the intent of these tests. ?
1. If you change the font family, you will most probably get a
different x-height, and different values for ascenders and descenders.
If you change the font-size you at least change the x-height.
2. The browser has to display the box at an appropriate height for
the input - it doesn't do an averagely sized box to cope with the
average of all the possible fonts any or all of us could use.
3. Therefore the browser adapts box height according to both
font-size and font-family.
4. Your boxes are not adapting width wise because you have fixed the
width in px for the input tag. You might also see width variation
with changes in font family and font size if you used a 'rubber
length' like em.
So your tests highlight the input box adapts to font size and family?
