Thanks to all who replied.
Suffice it to say that for whatever unknown and mysterious reasons
@fontface {...} h2:first-letter {...} is not ready for "prime-time"
cross OSes/browsers :-) .
Consequently, h2:first-letter {...} has been abandoned.
The @fontface slab-serif holding as intended now at least on this end
--` Mac OS X 10.4 and XP Parallels with these exceptions:
SeaMonkey 2.0.6 and 2.0.6 on XP Parallels rendering Helvetica Neue on
the index and the intended slab-serif on all inside pages.
IE/7.0 "stand alone" on XP Parallels showing the slab-serif on all pages
but the "Journal" page crashes the browser due to a "video" rather than
a font issue.
If anyone is still getting different results than mine, please let me
know...
