We have been slowly adding DVDs and music CDs into our collection. Right now, we are not doing "popular" music as we are building that collection, starting with classics, jazz, etc. DVDs tend to be youth focus or educational. For this reason, when comparing the labor and packaging costs with Kwik cases or having the collection behind the desk, we've chosen to leave DVDs and CDs in the stacks with the 3M protective label on the CDs and DVDs. In a year we'll do an inventory to see what we're missing and to calculate loss. That said, what has been the experience of those who have this collection, particularly if popular music and movies are offered? If you do not use the other forms of security (Kwik cases, DVDs/CDs located behind the desk), what is your real loss rate. How much did it cost you? How much would it cost to use these other security measures? Seems to me that some loss should be expected, and the other means may not be "cost effective". Anyone done some type of more formal study to determine loss? An interesting sidelight-new GASB rules apparently depreciate the library's collection over a two year period, which basically means the print collection has no value after two years-I read that somewhere. Anyone know anything more about the depreciated value of the library's various collections, computers, etc? I know there have been conference topics on this, but wondered if anyone saw anything new in print. I wonder how this affects insurance (if you don't have a replacement policy) and the "capital" value of our collections. Also wonder if that $2000 encyclopedic set in a particular subject area falls into this parameter, too. And, what about archival (read genealogy and local history) collections?
