Have the costs really increased? Computers do a lot of the work we used to
do in typing cards, pulling and refilling the check out cards, etc. E-mail
overdue systems decrease the cost even more once the software has been
purchased. Perhaps decision such as limiting the number of overdue notices
(we only do one, and then a billing statement) and the timing of those
notices (the day right after the due date may be unnecessary-look at a week
later so books have a chance to come back just a little bit late, and save
the postage) will decrease the cost.

If I cost out the labor, 10 cents per day per book is still reasonable,
especially as so many overdue notices list more than one book.

Our staff is currently reviewing our fee schedules to determine what, if
any, changes need to be made. In particular, we are still charging on 10
cents per day for overdue materials, yet the costs associated with sending
overdue notices have risen dramatically over the years. As far as I can
determine, Killeen has not updated the overdue fee in 15 years.

We also charge 15 cents per page to make copies, which we think is too much.
I unsuccessfully tried to have this lowered to 10 cents a few years ago, and
I'm ready to try again since we have several new members on the City
Council.

I would appreciate hearing from the CTLS members what your overdue and copy
charges are.

Thank you in advance,

Deanna
