Message from Director Martin On May 17, the National Museum Services Board met at the Portland Museum of Art immediately preceding the annual meeting of the American Association of Museums in Portland, Oregon. The major topic of discussion was the intersection of museums and technology. The Board heard from Maxwell L. Anderson, Director of the Whitney Museum of Art, and Rob Semper, Executive Associate Director of the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Anderson offered a thought provoking look into the future exploring questions that ranged from metadata standards development, to authority and authenticity of experience and information and the empowerment of the visitor. Semper spoke about the museum as mediator, between, in the case of science museums, the science location, the world of science, and the online audience. These discussions underscore IMLS's role in identifying best practices for the creation, management and preservation of digital resources, and in disseminating these practices throughout the library, archives, and museum communities. IMLS * shares best practices through its annual Web-Wise conference and the publication of A Framework of Guidance in Building Good Digital Collections; * provides grants to help museums, libraries, and archives digitize collections and develop online educational products and services; * supports research to explore the potential of new tools and techniques to aggregate disparate collections into large, easily searchable digital libraries and to create model collaborative systems to preserve digital materials; and * has surveyed libraries, museums, and State Library Administrative Agencies to document the status of their digitization and technology efforts. In addition to its support of U.S.-based digitization projects, IMLS is a partner in several international digital initiatives on topics such as children's literature and indigenous cultures. The agency has been an active partner with the Asian Pacific Economic Council, the Coalition for Networked Information, and the U.K.'s Joint Information Systems Committee. Recently, the Canadian Heritage Information Network has approached IMLS regarding a new international partnership. We look forward to continuing to help libraries, museums, and archives explore digital initiatives that will strengthen their public service. ********************************************* 2. IMLS Launches Online Project Planning Tutorial On May 19th, IMLS launched an online tutorial to help libraries, archives, and museums develop project plans for National Leadership Grant applications.
