The 1900 census images were added on July 31. The complete head of household name index -- including age, sex, race and birthplace -- is ready. We'll begin adding it to HeritageQuest Online in 3-4 groupings over the next 30-45 days. The first group is planned for late August (the exact date will be determined early next week) and will contain indexes for AZ, CA, FL, HI, KS, MD, TX, UT, WA and WI. There are several reasons why we are loading the 1900 name index in groups or batches: * Adding census indexes to HeritageQuest Online requires that we take the system offline. To avoid large periods of downtime for our customers, we've elected to add the 1900 index in batches. * The manufacturing time required to add census indexes is rather lengthy, especially for the larger decades like 1900. We also add extra fields such as age, birthplace, etc., and allow the user to sort the search results by any field. This requires a very meticulous quality control process to ensure accuracy and good performance. Spreading the index over 3-4 batches gives us the time we need to do the QC work. As to better notice when the states are loaded into HQO, if desired, I can post a brief message to the Genealib list each time we've added another batch. To help your staff and patrons, here is a little trick you can use to determine which states are available for *any* census year in HQO (I'll use 1920 as an example): >From the HQO home page, select Search Census. The Search Census screen will appear. Do *NOT* enter a given name or surname. Select 1920 (or the year desired) as the year to search in the pull-down list, then click the Search button. HQO will display a results list of all the hits for the states that are available. The states that are not yet available are grayed-out at the end of the results list, along with a statement that they haven't been loaded. --Bill ================================= William Forsyth, PMP Director of Product Management HeritageQuest ProQuest Information and Learning (801) 298-5358 ext. 1540 Laurie Mahaffey Central Texas Library System P.
