It’s not that hard to deal with sales taxes.  We set the price of books at nice round prices – such as $3.00 (this price includes the sale tax).  We log all the money we take in at our ongoing booksale.  Then we figure how much of it should have been sales tax and pay it.

Our two 24 hours days of sales tax free fundraising are the first two days of our real booksale.  We pay sales tax on the remaining days of the booksale.

We make good money on the on-going booksale – it’s the equivalent of another whole real booksale.

Subject: FW: on-going book sale

The Friends of the Library would like to have an on-going book sale at the library.  I would like to find out how other libraries do this without paying the sales tax.  I understand that State Law stipulates that non-profit organization can do two 24-hour fundraisers without paying tax.  One suggestion I heard is to ask for donation of the price of the book instead of collecting the the sale price.  Do you have any suggestions

Thank you very much for your help!
