Subject: Re: [ctls-l] FW: Cell phone policies

Cell phone use is sometimes a problem here too, Our problem with the cell
phones is more of the medical type. We have a staff member that wears a
pacemaker and certian types of cell phones can cause the raido waves to
interfer with the pacemaker, It's the outging call that will effect most
pacemaker wearer's. For her it isn't too bad because she has a newer
pacemaker that has been made to take care of the problem. I am sure that
even in your libraries you may not be aware of patrons with pacemakers.
Older pacemakers don't always have built in protections, so to be on the
safe side or only if cell phones are used in another complete location that
is designated for them then I feel they should not be used in a public
library. I do agree they are a way of life but and sometimes even we make
exceptions if someone has to use it to talk to a teacher if taking a test or
something on line and that is the only way around it.The staff member is
aware of it and stays away from that area only while a call is incoming or
going out, and we tell anyone that it must be on a non ring tone. Another
advantage for us is we too are a very small library and the Library board
puts it at the librarian's discretion., on how we work it.( I do have signs
up but reading signs in a library ... gee.. what do you think this is a
library and you expect me to read! ) I always enjoy showing patrons the sign
that is not 2 inches from their face.

[Sorry I had to put that in.]
