I'm the treasurer of the Williamson Museum and also evaluate grants of those
who request funding from the City of Round Rock. The museum has been hamstrung
from getting several grants because it has never done an audit. The city
requests at least a "letter audit" from each non-profit requesting funding in
addition to the 990. The museum is just now getting a letter audit, and for
this go-round the CPA is also noting steps we can take to function a bit
better. It is just good business, especially if you are handling a lot of funds
from diverse sources. A lot of places can not afford a full audit. THe letter
audit costs about $2,000.

We are non-profit, and in the past have tried to audit ourselves, and it hasn't
worked very well. This year, we hired an outside auditor, to do the audit, and
also set in place a system so we can do a meaningful audit ourselves. We
thought it a good idea to put something fairly professional in place while
everything is running smoothly.

Subject: [ctls-l] Audits

A non-profit member library would like to know if other non-profit libraries
are audited annually.

There is no problem or concern; the question was raised at a recent board
meeting.

Please reply to the list.

Thanks!
Laurie
