Well, to begin with, the term 'holiday' comes from the contraction of the
word 'holy day', so your objection to the word is meaningless.
Secondly, there is NOTHING about December 25th that has ANYTHING to do
with the birth of Jesus the Christ, except that the Roman Catholic church
decided to put a 'Christian' veneer on pre-existing pagan celebrations of
the season...
Evidence points to either a spring or an early autumnal birthdate for
Jesus the Christ (currently, spring is favored in scholarly circles,
based on a comet which would have been visible in the spring of 5 BCE...
but other evidence in the past has been used to argue for an early autumn
birthdate)...
Either way, the beginning of winter could NOT have been the actual birth
date of Jesus the Christ...it was a date that fell in the middle of the
ancient Roman Saturnalia...it was also the date the followers of Mithras
claimed was the birthdate of Mithras...and it also roughly corresponded
with the Yule festivities of the pagan northern European tribes..
So the Church, after centuries of trying to BAN Christians from
participating in the various early winter festivals of their particular
geographical area, adopted an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude,
and 'allowed' the festivals to continue, as long as the participants put
a 'Christian' interpretation to things...hence, holly was explained to
represent Christ's crown of thorns, etc.
But you would have been hard-pressed to find anything resembling our
modern holiday...even more hard-pressed to find anything representing a
RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE, other than a possible midnight Mass (which gave the
name to the holiday, e.g. "Christ's Mass")...most festivities more
closely resembled modern-day Mardi Gras, with people dressing in costume,
and a wild, licentious, lascivious time being enjoyed by all...
EASTER is the main holiday of the Christian church, the observance which
gives the religion it's whole meaning, and not Christmas...
