Not just England, but Scotland, Ireland, and Wales...and indeed in most
of Europe, you will find the really old churches and cathedrals are built
on spots which originally were of significance to the prior pagan
religion...
One finds the same thing in the New World, as the Catholic church built
cathedrals on the sites of Incan and Mayan temples...and indeed, most
church festivals in Mexico, Central and South America, are quite
obviously Incan and Mayan festivals with a Roman Catholic veneer...as are
the various religions of the Caribbean, which are obviously African with
a nod to Catholicism (ancient African dieties being renamed as Catholic
saints)...
