Actually, you'd be surprised...the biggest offenders are those who claim
to be 'religious'...but find something objectionable with some church
holiday or another...the main one I've found is their objection to
referring to "Christmas" as "Xmas", usually because some nun told them
back in parochial school it was taking Christ's name in vain...when in
fact 'X' WAS the way Christ was referred to by the early church, and as
we've been discussing, the whole December 25th thing is a pagan
celebration usurped by the church, having nothing to do with Christ in
the first place...
These same people will gladly dye eggs and decorate their house with
bunnies and chicks at Easter, too, considering themselves 'good
Christians' without a hint of irony...

Well, perhaps it's just a matter of semantics, but usually 'holiday' also
has a connotation of some sort of celebration...which doesn't describe
Ramadan at all...
I've always heard of Hanukkah referred to as a holiday and not as a
religious observance, since that's basically what it IS...it's a very
minor holiday to Jews, many of whom don't even observe it...and those who
do treat it as a 'holiday' rather than as a 'religious observance' on a
par with, say, Passover or Yom Kippur....
Quite frankly, it's Christians themselves who are to blame for what
perhaps SHOULD be 'religious observances' being turned into 'holidays'...
since they themselves are the ones who usurped pagan festivals and put a
Christian veneer to it...
It basically boils down to the fact that Christian holidays were NEVER
'religious observances' in the pure sense, while Jewish and Islamic holy
days HAVE been purely religious...

No, just for 8 days, which this year occured the 2nd week of December...
none of the Jews I know celebrate Hanukkah throughout the month, and
indeed a few don't observe it at all, as it's considered a very minor
holiday to them...
