My problem with Mrs. Dole is not so much who she, herself, is but with who
she's married to.
Way back in aught-96, there was a Presidential election and this guy named
"Bob" (the same fellow who goes to "Bob Fest" {do they dunk for apples in a
barrel?}) left the Senate and ran for President. Now, this fellow didn't
win the Grand Prize but he did win some states: AL, AK, CO, GA, ID, IN,
KS(?), MS, MT, NE, NC, ND, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, VA, WY. This was the tally
in November. A few (4 - 5) months later, there was this big ol' climatic,
climactic calamity up here in the North Central part of the U.S. -- namely
the flooding of the Red River of the North, more specifically, Grand Forks,
North Dakota (remember this was one of "Bob" 's states). The event we had
up here was termed a 100-year (or so) flood, requiring the evacuation of
30+ thousand people in about a short time. It has been described as the
largest evacuation of a population since the Civil War. During the flood
came the fire, destroying part of the historic downtown. People were
pretty shook up. Now we had FEMA, and the newsies, and the National Guard,
and all kinds of out-of-towners. Down Fargo (as in the movie) way, VeePee
Gore went to survey their situation at one point (Fargo is South but the
Red runs North so they got first look). During the first week after the
flood, this fellow named Clinton came to visit with our mayor and to have a
look (remember: he lost the state). A few days later, Mrs. "Bob" came to
have a look (in her capacity as CinC Red Cross {part of the out-of-town
contingency}). And "Bob" ? The winner of the state ? I didn't see hide
nor hair of him, from him, for him ... whatever ... unless I blinked ...
.... until I (and we all) learned he couldn't cash a check in his hometown
of Russell, KS, without some form of ID. What's really an irony is he
could've come to Grand Forks and we'd have taken his check ... after all,
North Dakotans gave him their votes, popular and electoral ...
Can't wait to see if one of Mrs. "Bob" 's campaign stops will be North
Dakota ...
Will she be standing in for him should she win?
