So, there is a difference between the L and the l.. and the capital L
liberals are hypocrites and poseurs... I won't argue with that. There
are hypocrites and jerks in every political camp. And I actually agree
with you. I remember back in the sixties.. When it became politically
fashionable to be part of the youth culture, the very same individuals who
only a year or two earlierwere busy persecuting individuals like myself,
changed sides, grew their hair long..became hip or cool..
I saw a similar dynamic operating during the Reagan years. We had (or
still have) the yuppie scene.... suddenly, it became trendy to be a
conservative marketeer...."Greed is good," etc. It does go in cycles.
About the posting you referred to..I'm sorry. I didn't see it. I can't
read every post on the list...nor respond to every offensive posting..I've
been busy of late. Yes. Something like that is completely unacceptable and
offensive. I like to think that most of the people who contribute to this
list are nice people who are mad as hell about the drift of the country...
we're probably all of us bugged by some of the same issues...but we bungle
in our communication with one another.. As a member of a racial minority
group, I've had a lifetime's worth of experience dealing with racist
offensive behavior directed towards me....(usually people mistake me for
being hispanic...I have fair skin, dark eyes and hair..and I'm tall..
since I'm not brown skinned and I don't look like a "typical" indian..
Many assume that I must be hispanic...and they marvel at the fact that I
speak English so well!
Of coure, what's really galling is when
a verbal assault is directed towards my children or someone I love...
which has happened to my family on more than one occasion. Of course,
when minority people complain about these things, members of the dominant
community often dismiss these incidents (...stop whining, etc.)> I want
to be sympathetic to European Americans..."whites"...but sometimes, they
are so close-minded and bigoted.
So, yes,
I know how words can offend and wound them.... crush their self-esteem..
so hate speech is a reality. On this point, I disagree with some of the
people on this thread. Words do hurt..and they do affect us in subtle
ways that aren't obvious.... As you
know, the word "squaw"
is only a term relevant to a particular language and community of Native
American people... the variety and complexity of Native American peoples
is a subject all unto itself. Yet, we are lumped under one generic
term, "indian." But all of this is a symptom of an ongoing problem we have
in this country...the labeling, classifying, categorizing, stereotyping of
people... a "Jew" is this... a "Hispanic" is that... a "white" female is
supposed to be this.. The truth is, I love people of all colors, sizes,
shapes...straight, gay, conservative, liberal. There are jerks in every
racial group...of every complexion, political affiliation, or gender..
But unfortunately, we still haven't reached a point where we can get
beyond these superficial differences of skin pigmentation, accent,
religious affiliation, etc.
As a male, I've been guilty of my own share of insensitive behavior
towards women. ...not intentional...just the
usual unthinking kinds of
things men do, but early in life, I did see women being
mistreated..demeaned, insulted, humiliated, undervalued...and that angered
me then..and it angers me now. I think of all of the contributions, work,
suffering, struggles that our mothers, grandmothers, and their mothers
went through... and they still are underrepresented in our political
system, in business.... hell.. sometimes, I think the women of the world
should seize power and takeover... If you haven't noticed, men have made a
mess of things..
