-Caveat Lector- LIGHT SHED ON LANDOW ==================== (CNNS, 02/06/99) -- A cartoon panel by Tom Tomorrow depicts Bill Clinton, Trent Lott, and (apparently) Tom DeLay. Tom Tomorrow first notes that even if you "watch the responsible and sober voices of authority rehash the impeachment debate until your eyes bleed... there's still gonna be more going on than you'll probably ever know." The panel then shows Clinton, Lott, and DeLay in whispered conversation: CLINTON: You guys wrap this up quickly and nobody sees the photos of Orrin Hatch with the farm animals! LOTT: Don't forget about my tapes of Hillary having phone sex with Madeline Albright, pal! DeLAY: Look, we do this my way -- or everybody finds out about that threesome between the two of you and Linda Tripp! [1] Tom Tomorrow's cartoon suggests two things: (1) there's a lot more going on, behind-the-scenes, than we are being told; (2) a great deal of blackmail is occurring, again, behind-the-scenes. THEORY: From time to time, the bitter political blackmail battles erupt to the point where hidden dirt is published, briefly, in major news outlets. Then, a temporary truce is reached between the various blackmailers, and the stories disappear as quickly as they had erupted. Case in Point: The Kathleen Willey story. On November 29, 1993, according to Ms. Willey, Bill Clinton "fondled her breasts, then placed her hand against his erect penis." [2] This incident allegedly occurred "in the small galley just off the Oval Office." [3] Note Michael Isikoff and Evan Thomas, reporters with Newsweek magazine: "In the Clinton sex scandals, Willey is a mysterious and somewhat overlooked figure." [4] Ms. Willey's husband committed "suicide" on the same day as Bill Clinton allegedly groped her in the White House. Two names, one well-known, the other less well-known, interface repeatedly with Kathleen Willey: LINDA TRIPP and NATHAN LANDOW. Linda Tripp, who surreptitiously recorded the "girl talk" tapes between herself and MONICA LEWINSKY, has also been good friends with Ms. Willey. It was Linda Tripp who encountered Willey that afternoon in November, 1993, immediately after Willey had reportedly escaped the groping paws of Bill Clinton. But although Tripp says that "Yes, Willey looked disheveled," she adds that Willey did not appear upset but, on the contrary, seemed "joyful." [5] The less-known name connected to Kathleen Willey is that of Nathan Landow, a multi-millionaire and generous cash contributor to the Democratic Party. In January, 1978, the Washington Post "published a story linking Landow with Joe Nesline, a known associate of organized crime figures." [6] Landow has also been under investigation by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee for an alleged kickback scheme. In return for helping Oklahoma Indians settle a tribal land dispute in their favor, Landow allegedly "demanded 10 percent of any development revenues and gas or oil royalties on the disputed land -- a bonanza possibly worth as much as $200 million." [7] A Congressional Committee was also looking into whether Landow may have played a role in a suspected scheme to pay-off WEBSTER HUBBELL to keep his mouth shut. [8] Nathan Landow's daughter, HAROLYN LANDOW CARDOZO, worked with Kathleen Willey as a volunteer at the White House. Harolyn Landow Cardozo is married to MICHAEL CARDOZO. Michael Cardozo is the attorney who was in charge of Bill Clinton's legal-defense fund. Several months after Bill Clinton allegedly groped Kathleen Willey, Harolyn Landow Cardozo invited Willey to Nathan Landow's estate on the eastern shore of Maryland. A source told Isikoff et al., reporters with Newsweek magazine, that Nathan Landow apparently suggested to Ms. Willey "that it would be 'better' if her story never came out." [9] But, responded Nathan Landow to Isikoff et al.,: "You've got no goddamn proof of anything other than what I've told you." [10] Was Nathan Landow romancing widow Willey, or was widow Willey romancing Nathan Landow? One spin is that Landow "was attempting to keep Willey quiet by wooing her." [11] Another spin is that Willey was "a debt-ridden, glamour-seeking widow," sort of a "stalker" of Landow. [12] Whatever the case, Landow paid a private charter company to fly Willey to his Maryland estate shortly after Willey had received a subpoena in the PAULA JONES case. [13] But like Tom Tomorrow says, there's a lot more going on than we'll probably ever know.
