That's an interesting mistake. Of course, it could be just a memory
problem. (Although she claimed to have a photographic memory). I also
once noticed a mistake in her narrative and I wonder if this might be
similar. She said that she had been to the "governor's mansion" on
Machinac Island. Now, most people who are much familiar with Michigan
know that there is no "governor mansion" on Machinac Island. But I
remember visiting the island as a kid in the early 60s (about when she
claims to first have gone there). My parents called the Grand Hotel
(where, I think the movie "Out of Time" was filmed, the "governor's
mansion". I don't know if it was a joke of some sort, but the Mennin
family of Mennin aftershave, etc owned it. One of them was governor at
the time. So it was the "governor's mansion". It may be that other
mis-statements are similar. This sort of analysis is tricky. You can't
throw babies out with the bath water. It may make an interesting project
to try to analyze their story and see what doesn't make sense and try to
do some investigation to sort it out. For instance, some of her
childhood stories might be verified by people who went to school with
her at the time. There may be someone on the list who lives in the area
or maybe even knew her, etc. It is a smaller world then some of us may realize.
