At the risk of restarting the "definition wars", I'll remind CTRL
readers that 'republic' entails representative gov't: legislators
and a presiding officer, rather than monarchs etc; and 'democracy'
entails having the representatives chosen by the populace, rather
than by oligarchs etc. The US is constituted as a democratic repu-
blic - we select various representatives by popular elections.
There are also oligarchic republics, democratic monarchies, popular
tyrannies, kleptocracies, any number of other gov'tal structures -
but the terms 'republic' and 'democracy' are NOT mutually exclusive.
Interested students may wish to consult a few good dictionaries and
encyclopediae, to gain further insight into these labels and their
RealWorld embodiments. And meditate as to why theory rarely survives
contact with reality...
