Of course, that is the primary difference between a republic and a
democracy. Democracies are not limited. If you control the media you can
get the "democracy" that it is important for the government to control
everything that you want it to control. Limitations on government are
then perceived to be old fashioned and out moded and need to be changed.
The government needs the "tools" to handle the newly perceived (media
created) problem. "Global warming"? Any law that the "democratically"
elected representatives choose to enact becomes justified no matter what
Constitutional restraints might have previously implied.

The most foolish statement of all. "It can never happen here because
we are Americans and we're inherently better then those: English,
Germans, Japanese, Koreans, Russians, Chinese, Serbs, etc." The only
greatness to the American people was their creation and maintenance of a
government of limited power whose purpose was the securing of individual
rights. The abandonment of those principles will lead to the same
problems that other nations have faced. Only a return to those
principles will keep the country from eventual disaster. (Or the present
disasters that have put millions into prison for "crimes" which harm no one).
