I agree that the power of belief may be the full explanation for the
power derived from these "potions", but I do not discount the
possibility that the power of belief does not in some way link into
other powers we do not understand.

A point well said, and one which I would not discount either. Surely
"Occultism" itself, being about "hidden" things would mean necessarily that
much of it would be unknown. There is power in the belief as well as power
to be gained from other means, natural or supernatural.

PS It has been my contention, regarding the "Occult" that it gains power and
has force due to the fact that it thrives and propagates in secrecy. My
contention is that the secrecy itself is a force of power that can be tapped
into and used. This is why it is always stated in religious mantras that to
bring something "into the light" is to render it harmless. The very fact of
secrecy is the source of power.
