Norwegian monastery investigated on sex allegations Carin Pettersson 3/26/04 "A monastery in the Oslo Catholic diocese is being investigated by members of the Vatican after sexual assaults were reported....According to information obtained by VG, the investigation may lead to relocation of one or several central persons within the Catholic Church in Norway. The Vatican is also going to investigate if the leaders of the church failed to follow-up of these accusations. There was allegedly particularly one concrete reported case of assault that triggered the Vatican's decision to investigate....There were strong reactions in the catholic environment that the church allegedly tried to keep a lid on the case. The priest is still practicing as a priest at the same location, while the student who claimed to be abused has left the monastery. Church in Newfoundland willing to settle with sexual abuse victims - Canadian Press 3/26/04 "Corner Brook, Nfld. (CP) - A Roman Catholic diocese in Newfoundland wants to settle with 36 men who suffered sexual abuse as altar boys between 1961 and 1989. The Supreme Court of Canada reaffirmed Wednesday lower court rulings that the diocese of St. George's is liable for the sexual assaults committed by Father Kevin Bennett. ....Bennett, who was convicted during the early 1990s on more than 30 counts of sexual assault, spent about a decade on Newfoundland's west coast before being transferred to St. Bernard's and Terrenceville on the province's Burin Peninsula. He left the church in 1989." http://www.canada.com/maritimes/story.asp?id=16EFB0A2-EF9C-4B6E-B68A-31D88C8468CE

Life in Iraq Deteriorates With U.N. Sanctions
Stephanie Kriner, Staff Writer, DisasterRelief.org Life in Iraq has continued to deteriorate despite efforts by relief agencies to ease the humanitarian costs of U.N. sanctions. After nine years of a U.N. trade embargo, clean water, food, and medical treatment are scarce and the country's innocent civilians are struggling to survive. The U.N. agreed in 1996 to allow Iraq to sell oil for food, but despite the concession, the situation has only grown worse, humanitarian workers claim....."After nine years of trade sanctions . . . the situation of the civilian population is increasingly desperate. Deteriorating living conditions, inflation, and low salaries make people's everyday lives a continuing struggle," the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a report. "The weakest and most vulnerable who suffer from sanctions are young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases." Iraq's Health Ministry claims that the sanctions have caused more than 1.26 million deaths since 1990. Last month alone, 14,000 Iraqis died because of U.N. sanctions, Iraq says. Nearly 6,500 of those who died were children under age five. Most children die of chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, and respiratory problems, the ministry reported.

Bush jokes about search for WMD, but it's no laughing matter for critics
David Teather in New York Friday March 26, 2004
"President George Bush sparked a political firestorm yesterday after making what many judged a tasteless and ill-judged joke about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Mr Bush made the joke at a black-tie event for radio and television journalists in Washington on Wednesday night. He narrated a slide show, described as the White House election year album, making hay of the administration's reputation for secrecy and strained relations with European allies. But it was the joke about the war in Iraq that drew attacks. A slide showed Mr Bush in the Oval office, leaning to look under a piece of furniture. "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere," he told the audience, drawing applause."
