--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector-a blindered and deliberately limited focus on corporations is very often used in an attempt to rehabilitate classic liberalism and anti-statist ideology. the public has been massively ripped off by ad-hoc "corporate welfare" but have, TO AN EQUAL OR GREATER EXTENT, been ripped off by nihilist, gingrichite destruction of government regulatory powers & economic oversight. the privatization of state-run, nonprofit public utilities, which have been a very successful and efficient example of dirigist policy, has resulted in scams that have cost the public billions. now, who is it that is running the covert operations against chavez, with the ultimate goal of *privatizing* venezuela's state-run oil industry? and who is doing the same against saudi arabia in a more subtle way right now, with the aim of privatizing Aramco? and take a look at russia, good god. the vast expansion of the 'octopus' system of money laundering and offshore tax shelters which funds the covert activities of the emerging oligarchal shadow govt. police "state" could never have been put together over the past 30 years without the critical contribution of federal 'meddling bureaucrats' sitting on their hands and refusing to lay down the law. one can look at only one side of the story and find examples of govt. giveaways to corporations using publicly funded research & development, but at the same time, general govt. spending in many areas of public science research and R&D began a sharp nose-dive in the neoliberal reagan years. the federal public-works spending program known as the apollo moon mission created overall economic benefits 10x the cost, according to some estimates. welcome to the world where good & just results require good policy decisions and decent leadership, rather than being dependent simply on categorical ideology. david korten is an example of the "anti-corporate" limited hangout; he peddles the hayekian notion that government intervention and planning are always *inevitably* bad, and portrays corporations and government dirigism as equal and equivalent villains. it's not coincidental that he is a member of the club of rome. as for chomsky, he has been making efforts in recent years to rehabilitate adam smith as a misunderstood "left-libertarian" (note that korten has been doing this too as a central part of his message). again, in his day smith was THE propaganda voice of the british east india company, which is the QUINTESSENCE of the corporate-govt. symbiosis that chomsky claims to be critiquing. he's full of shit. people wonder how chomsky could refuse to acknowledge the facts about JFK... look at how he admires adam smith to start understanding why. also look at the fact that he's a protege and lifelong admirer of bertrand russell, who was simultaneously a "left-libertarian" and world-government promoter. -brian On Jul 19, 2004, at 12:26 AM, mark urban wrote: > The following is from Chomsky's SECRETS, LIES AND DEMOCRACY page 22 > 3rd paragraph through page 23.
