# Machines to help sequence genes. WASHINGTON (AP) New machines will enable
the Dept. of Energy to triple its speed in decoding human genes and should
enable the agency to reach its goal of sequencing 300 million base pairs
of DNA by March. Elbert Branscomb, director of the dept's Joint Genome
Institute, said 24 new DNA sequencer machines coming to its Walnut Creek,
Calif., lab will enable the agency to increase the number of base pairs
processed monthly from about 5 million to about 15 million. 12 machines
are already operating and another dozen are expected soon. THEN they'll be
cooking: http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2559936105-ef7
: Do you want your genes sequenced? Are yours out of sequence? Can/should
yours be sorted, resequenced, replicated, leaked? Do you own your own genes?
Can/should/will your genes be patented? If someone else owns your genes and
you damage them, can you be sued/prosecuted? Do you have any secrets left?

# 2000 may fuel Jerusalem Syndrome. JERUSALEM(AP) Jerusalem Syndrome strikes
with little warning. After a few days in the holy city, seemingly normal
pilgrims imagine they're biblical figures, sing psalms at the top of their
lungs, preach to passersby or dress up in hotel bedsheets. Jerusalem cler-
gymen and officials confabbed to discuss ways to spot and deal with the
mental illness, which one psychiatrist says may strike as many as one in
100 pilgrims and disrupt Jesus' 2000th birthday celebrations. Protestants
are more vulnerable, apparently because their beliefs are less structured
than those of the Catholics, Monsignor Richard Mathes, the Vatican's cult-
ural attache in Israel, said. The only cure is a prefrontal lobotomy or
oral sex: http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2559934479-a69

that person? Have you ever channeled a saint? What color sheet do you wear?

# Bank apologizes for Robertson ties. EDINBURGH (AP) - The Bank of Scotland
apologized to shareholders for getting involved in a business deal with US
religious broadcaster Pat Robertson. The bank canceled a deal to launch a
telephone banking service with Robertson after he referred to Scotland as
"a rather dark land" because it tolerates gay people. "We recognize that
the bank's involvement was a mistake," Sir John Shaw, the bank's newly
elected governor, told shareholders at the annual meeting. Shaw said the
bank was "naive" not to realize Robertson's opinions would cause concern.

glanced up to see Linda clomp out of their hideously well-decorated
bedroom carrying her ferns and his Don Ho albums, and felt a cold chill
go up his spine as he realized that he did not know how to operate the
microwave oven." --Lucian Janik, Jr.
