I am truly sorry for the unpleasant experience you and your family had with
"skinheads." I do, however, take exception to your allotting them to my
state of Alabama and the state of my birth, Georgia. I do hope you are not
implying that they would blend in in these areas of the deep south, but that
is what it rather sounds like from your "neo-confederacy" remarks.
I think this may be painting us Southerners with a rather broad brush. I am
weary of being called "red-neck" and "hillbilly" by people from more
"enlightened" regions of this country, especially by those to whom the term
might more aptly be a description of themselves than those they are
denigrating. I do not, however, judge a whole region by the behavior of a
few.
I believe I noticed more people who appeared to be "skinheads" in California
that I have ever seen closer to home. I lived in southern Illinois for five
years where I was often told "You'uns say ya'll, don't youse." This is not
a regional problem. I think the stereo-types of tv and movies frequently
have a Southern accent because it makes for good theater, the same reason
many singers affect one.
Again, I am sorry that it happened to you but please be assured it happens
in other areas. It did to me in the midwest with one of my children and
also in NYC in the garment district when I worked there years ago. Again to
same son from opposite extreme when he attended school in DC with Alabama
license plate. Go figure.

PS Remember, too, that Tennessee is the "Volunteer State" for a reason as
regards war efforts.
