I find it ironic that Bob Barr is so often accused of being a racist. I
happen to live in Atlanta and have known of him for more than 15 years. Back
during the Reagan administration he was the Federal prosecutor in this area.
His picture was often in the paper. It only many years later that I finally
found out that he was not mulato. I even figured he got the job because of
his race.
What is the evidence that Bob Barr is a racist? He went to a meeting of a
group that grew out of a group that was percieved as being racist 40 years
ago? The same for Trent Lott. Most politicians at this level will go to most
meetings which purport to have more than a dozen people interested in
hearing them speak.
I was once at a meeting that Bob Barr attended. It was a group called the
"Fully Informed Jury Association". It was dedicated to informing potential
jurors that they could judge the law as well as the facts. One of his
assistants came to our table and said to us that "Bob Barr believes like you
do". Really? After his speach we spent so much time questioning the drug
laws that our group's leader stopped us, saying it was beginning to sound
like a NORML meeting. Many of our members are in favor of the FIJA purpose
because they hope that this will be a means towards ending the drug war. Is
Bob Barr then in favor of legalizing drugs since he spoke at a meeting of
our group. Hardly. Just because a politician (or anyone else) goes to a
meeting certainly doesn't indicate that they believe in anything that the
group espouses. (This probably is especially true of politicians, most of
whom don't believe in anything).
