-Caveat Lector-
Of course, politicians are not particularly selective in what group they
speak in front of, as long as the money rolls in. So, what else is new.
And I would agree with you that Barr is not necessarily a racist because
of a speaking engagement in front of a racist group. Sure. But it was a
terrible mistake on his part, because the CCC has long been networking
with a variety of extremist groups who are more open in their virulent
racism and bigotry. But at best, it shows his naivete and ignorance of
the CCC's long term goals and objectives. Anyone who has been following
the activity of this group knows that the organization is just the
latest reincarnation, albeit with a "kinder, gentler face," of the White
Citizen's Council of the good old days of Jim Crow. Since white hoods,
and jaws full of Redman tobacco are no longer in fashion, racism is now
being sold by Klansmen in three-piece suits.... a la David Duke.
Whether or not Barr is a mulatto is really absurd, but I think it goes to
show how the issue of "race" still seems to be THE American story that we
have to deal with. Given our three hundred year old history of failed
relations in this area, I think that every American politician has a
responsibility to be sensitive to the feelings of their constituents,
white or black.
