more than 100 million natives fell under European rule. Their
extermination would follow. As the natives died out, they were
replaced by slaves brought from Africa.

Just a short note
The principle cause of death in the americas was disease. The europeans had
been continously aflicted by smallpox and black death for hundreds of years.
When going to the america's, it has been estimated that up between 80-90%
died from disease.
Also the sad fact is that there is not a racial or religious group that has
not committed genocide against another at some time in their history.
Slaves were brought from africa because white slaves were more expensive,
and more importantly in the cotton picking regions blacks could be made to
work harder.
The effect of diseases on history is a little discussed but often
determining factor in how things turn out(see Jared Diamond- Guns steel and
history)
That is why the development of race bombs (genetically selective dideases
that disproporionally kill ethnic groups) is probably the most frightening
development in warfare in all time. The temptation to use will be strong, as
it leaves the infra structure untouched.
