Well, not exactly. The African slave trade to the Americas began after the
Jesuits forced an end to the Spanish practice of enslaving Indians (Native
Americans, specifically the Guarani of Paraguay). And there was indeed a
white slave trade: while it was theoretically possible for an indentured
servant to pay off his indenture, many indentured servants were never able
to do so, and lived out their lives in a condition hardly distinguishable
from chattel slavery.
