The Bible is unclear on this point, whether His driving the money
changers out of the temple began at the beginning of his ministry, or at
the end, just before the Last Supper.

But this would have been solely a local matter, at most warranting a
public flogging...the Romans wouldn't have gotten involved, at least on
their own. Even if the Jewish authorities asked the Romans to intervene,
the Romans would only have decided on crucifixion based on what the
Romans perceived as great crimes against the Roman state...and driving
money changers out of the temple of what the Romans considered a minor
and petty local religion wouldn't have done it.

Crucifixion was the execution method reserved for what we would describe
as 'high crimes and misdemeanors'...petty thieves wouldn't be crucified,
neither would someone considered a heretic by a local 'minor and petty'
religion...

In modern terms, someone who was a housebreaker, smashing your backdoor
window and making off with your TV and stereo, wouldn't be crucified; a
bank CEO who embezzled millions might be. Someone who gets drunk and
smashes up the tavern he's been drinking in wouldn't be crucified; a
mass-murderer like Richard Speck or Ted Bundy would be. And someone who
shows up at his local town council meeting and shouts that all the bums
should be thrown out, overturning a few tables and chairs in the process,
would be locked up in the local jail...back in colonial times, he might
even have been flogged and put in the public stocks...but he wouldn't
have been executed; if the local authorities could convince the national
authorities that such a man threatened civil insurrection and a
revolution against the state, then the NATIONAL authorities would
intervene, and if they deemed the evidence was true, they would then
execute that man by the method commonly used for people deemed guilty of
treason.

In our time, that would usually be by electric chair; 2000 years ago, the
Romans' method of execution for such a crime was crucifixion.

And it's this little fact that sticks in the craw of 'good' Christians
who are in fact anti-Jew ("the Jews killed Jesus!")....that the Jews
could NOT execute Jesus, that the execution was in fact proclaimed and
carried out by the Roman state...
