Crucifixion was not the mode of execution used by Jewish law. Granted that
Jesus had been convicted of heresy, blasphemy, etc., by the Sanhedrin, he
should have been stoned to death. Instead, he was turned over to the Romans
and crucified. Crucifixion was the standard Roman punishment for political
crimes...that is, for treason. He had clearly declared himself to be the
monarch of a separate kingdom, independent of and by implication superior to
that of Rome. He had pointed out the hypocrisy of Temple officials having in
their possession *in the Temple* Roman currency--currency which bore the
image of the Emperor Tiberius, who was worshipped as a god in the province
of Syria (which included Judea). By doing so, he had explicitly challenged
the authority of Rome: "Give [that is, return] to Caesar the things that are
Caesar's, and give to God the things that are God's." Pilate did everything
he could to give Jesus a out, to make it possible to release him, but Jesus
was quite firm in his insistence that his citizenship, and that of his
followers, was in a kingdom "not of this world." The Roman procurator could
not conceive of anything not subject to Rome; and he thus had no choice, by
his criteria, but to order Jesus bound over for execution along with
convicted urban guerrillas (*lestai*, 'thieves'--the commonly-used term for
anti-Roman activists). Jesus, in short, *was* executed for treason, treason
against a state whose authority he did not recognize.
