Violent Crime in US Cities Up 42% Since 1969, Wash Post Says

Washington, Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Violent crime in large U.S. cities has
risen 41.7 percent since 1969, despite frequent reports of short-term drops
since the early 1990s, according to a study to be released later this week,
the Washington Post said. The study, by the progressive Milton S. Eisenhower
Foundation, shows violent crimes in cities with 250,000 people or more has
risen from 860 per 100,000 people in 1969 to 1,218 in 1998, the newspaper
said. While violent crimes in major cities have dropped from the 1991 peak
rate of 1,890 per 100,000 people, the report says recent gains in public
safety are exaggerated because the comparisons occur during a period when the
level of violence was unusually high, the newspaper said.

In its first year of operation, the nationwide system of instant criminal
background checks mandated by the 1993 Brady Law has prevented more than
160,000 people from illegally buying firearms, U.S. Attorney General Janet
Reno said Nov. 30.
